Who We Are

Second Star to the Right is an independent bookstore sells thoughtfully curated books, toys and gifts. Inspired by J.M. Barrie’s book, Peter Pan, we fill our shelves predominantly with stories written for children and young adults, but we intend for our store to be enjoyed by readers of all ages. Second Star serves as a community hub, and we seek to actively engage with our customers both through bookselling and through dynamic programming for all ages. We are newly relocated to the Platt Park neighborhood in Denver, CO, and are rapidly expanding in both size and programming. Learn more by exploring this site!

Job Description

We are looking for an experienced bookseller with excellent communication and customer service skills and a passion for reading and recommending books. The bookseller will be involved in the day-to-day responsibilities that are associated with selling our books, toys and other products. This position also will offer myriad opportunities to learn about and get involved in the many aspects of running an independent bookstore, such as book buying, event coordinating, and community involvement. We are looking for a bookseller who can add their strengths and knowledge to our own as we expand our space and offerings. This position requires a high level of comfort with children and a sound knowledge of children's books, but training is available for the right candidate. 

This position is for 20+ hours/week, including closing shifts, weekends, and off-site events, if necessary.

At this time, we are seeking applicants who are 18+.

Daily Tasks Involve

  • Serving a range of customers; addressing inquiries and identifying customer needs

  • Preparing for and enthusiastically reading during our frequent storytimes.

  • Recommending books and informing our customers of upcoming events

  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of current titles and changes in the market

  • Reviewing upcoming and current titles for staff picks and newsletters

  • Handling payments by cash, credit card, and other forms through our point-of-sale system

  • Processing customer special orders and book reservations

  • Shelving and merchandising

  • Stock-checking books, toys and other products

  • Helping with special events on evenings and weekends

  • Undertaking general housekeeping duties

  • Attending bi-weekly staff meetings

  • Other tasks as required

Desired Skills

  • The ability and confidence to deal with a wide range of people

  • Creativity and flexibility when handling customer needs and questions

  • Comfort with computer-based tasks and retail systems

  • Organizational and time management skills

  • The ability to work under pressure and multitask

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team as necessary

  • Prior experience in a bookstore, library, or retail strongly desired
