School Visit Information & Guidelines
Author visits are a great way to teach kids about the creative process, telling stories, the power of perseverance and so much more! Our authors range from local to international authors. We work directly with authors and with the big publishing houses in order to bring authors to your school and connect them with your students! Visits are easy to book and require minimal effort from educators - we know you're busy enough already as it is! Let us take care of the hard stuff!
Publishers send authors on national tours in conjunction with the release of a new book - this could be a debut novelist, a new book in a series by your favorite author or a new standalone title. These visits are paid for by the publisher in the hopes of getting the word out about the author's next book. Each visit has a book order minimum, which can be anywhere from 30 books to 50 books, depending on the author. Most schools hit these numbers very easily, especially with the sales support provided by Second Star.
Second Star provides you with everything you need to meet those minimums! We create a paper order form to be sent home in the student folders as well as a link for an online digital form for families who wish to pay with credit or debit cards. We also sell directly to the students so that your school's Financial Secretary does not have to be burdened with collecting the money and writing a check.
Before you book a visit, we do ask that you do a few things:
- Make sure the date of the author visit is free from testing, field trips and other assemblies that would detract from the author's presentation
- Check with your admin to get approval before requesting an author
- Be willing to hand out paper order forms as well as share a digital order form link
- Read all requirements for the author you are requesting and make sure you can meet them (i.e., audience size, book minimums, A/V needs, etc.)
Author visits are typically planned about 3 - 6 weeks in advance, although there are often last-minute author visit opportunities available.
The most successful visits are the ones that have the full support of the school. You can create a banner with the art department to welcome the author, put on a play or skit with the drama department based on the novel that the author will be talking about, etc.
Second Star will also provide an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) of the upcoming title so that you can read it first and have the chance to share it with students. We are also happy to provide a Book Talk to your school, whether it is a scheduled in-person book talk with a Second Star Rep or a link to a Book Talk video that can be shared with all participating classes. Each school will also receive a paper order form to be sent home with students, a digital order form to be shared on any online platforms that are available, and an 8 x 11 school flyer to be displayed in the library, cafeteria, front entrance - anywhere in your school to help spread the word about the visit! We will also provide a checklist for educators to help them stay organized and on top of the visit!
All pre-ordered books will be signed and personalized by the visiting author either before or after the presentation. Second Star does allow for post orders within a week of the author's visit. All post ordered books will be signed by the author, but will not be personalized to the student. Post orders will be fulfilled and dropped off at the school within a week of the due date.
