Join our LGBTQ+  Book Club! Enjoy snacks and conversation about queer and trans representation (or lack thereof) in Young Adult books, and suggest titles to read throughout the year. Store Manager and YA book enthusiast Mariana will be guiding the discussion. This book club will be a safe(r) space for YA readers to nerd out over books and be themselves; hateful speech or actions will not be tolerated.

July's Book is:

Where We Go From Here by Lucas Rocha

Ian has just been diagnosed with HIV.
Victor, to his great relief, has tested negative.
Henrique has been living with HIV for the past three years.

When Victor finds himself getting tested for HIV for the first time, he can't help but question his entire relationship with Henrique, the guy he has -- had -- been dating. See, Henrique didn't disclose his positive HIV status to Victor until after they had sex, and even though Henrique insisted on using every possible precaution, Victor is livid.

That's when Victor meets Ian, a guy who's also getting tested for HIV. But Ian's test comes back positive, and his world is about to change forever. Though Victor is loath to think about Henrique, he offers to put the two of them in touch, hoping that perhaps Henrique can help Ian navigate his new life. In the process, the lives of Ian, Victor, and Henrique will become intertwined in a story of friendship, love, and self-acceptance.

Set in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this utterly engrossing debut by Brazilian author Lucas Rocha calls back to Alex Sanchez's Rainbow Boys series, bringing attention to how far we've come with HIV, while shining a harsh light on just how far we have yet to go.

A Note from Mariana:

Hello friends! As a queer person of color, I've spent most of the last few years as a bookseller consuming as many books as I could that featured...well, queer people, and people of color! As I've done so, I've noticed a surge in what kind of books and what kind of representation are available. I believe Young Adult fiction is at the forefront of this push for inclusion and representation, and want to share my love for these books with more people! My hopes for this book club are twofold:

1) To provide a space for lgbtqia+ readers to read books that they see themselves mirrored in - as well as books that can provide windows into experiences different from their own, and

2) To provide a safe space for discussion that acknowledges the special and often very personal experience that comes from reading a book that makes you feel seen.
